Weather warnings are in place for today and tomorrow in the South West

Friday 9 JUNE 2023: An AMBER Heat-Health Alert has been issued for the South West and is in effect between 09/06/2023 at 09:00 and 12/06/2023 at 09:00.

Significant impacts are probable across the health and social care sector due to the high temperatures, including observed increase in mortality across the population, particularly in the 65+ age group or those with health conditions. Impacts may also be seen in younger age groups.

For guidance please visit: Hot weather and health: supporting vulnerable people - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Saturday 10 JUNE 2023 Thunderstorm warning 10 am - 9 pm

High temperatures developing across parts of England and Wales on Saturday are expected to trigger a scattering of showers across this area, some of which are likely to be torrential and thundery, bringing 30-40mm in an hour. The odd place affected by multiple showers could see more than this, perhaps in excess of 60mm. As well as rain, hail, strong gusts of wind, and lightning will be additional hazards. Despite all of this, many places in the warning area will remain dry, or only see small amounts of rain, due to the well scattered nature of the heaviest showers.

NIHR First Steps into Research Programme

Applications have just opened for a new programme delivered by the National Institute for Health and Care Research’s Clinical Research Network for the South West Peninsula, called the ‘First Steps’ programme.

The First Steps programme is open to anyone working in public health or social care, in roles such as Occupational Therapists, Health Visitors, Public Health Practitioners, Care Home Staff, Analysts, Community-based positions and many more roles – these are just some examples of the roles the programme is open to. The aim of the programme is to develop your research skills and knowledge, allowing you to work on and with NIHR research studies, and to integrate research into the workforce of Local Authorities. The programme also has a very strong focus on providing the knowledge and skills to helping attendees develop a career pathway in health and social care research. The programme will consist of 10 learning days, which will be backfilled in order to ensure protected learning time and will start in September 2023 and finish in January 2024. The structure of the programme will consist of two face-to-face sessions, seven online sessions, and one self-directed day. You will also be assigned to a mentor throughout the programme who will support your progress. Attached is both an information sheet and an application form if you are interested applying, alongside an equality and diversity monitoring form. A successful application would also require approval from your line manager – we have also attached a guidance for managers document.

Jack Brazier has been involved in designing the course content and the general planning of the wider programme, so if you are interested in applying and have some questions then please do not hesitate to get in touch with him. Alternatively, in the information sheet for applicants document, you will find the contact details of Pauline McGlone, Helen Chenoweth and Elly French, who are based within NIHR and are leading the programme.

Please do get in touch with Jack Brazier, Public Health Research Support Officer at jack.brazier@somerset.gov.uk if you are interested.
