National Patient Safety Alerts
To support awareness of and compliance with National Patient Safety Alerts across Somerset
Introduction
There are a range of national bodies and teams that issue safety communications to healthcare providers about risks of serious harm to patients. In the past this has been done through a variety of means such as alerts, messages and notices.
The National Patient Safety Alerting Committee (NaPSAC) has been established to improve the effectiveness of these safety critical communications and to support providers to better implement the required actions.
The way NaPSAC is doing this is through the introduction of National Patient Safety Alerts (PSAs). National Patient Safety Alerts, include those from the Central Alerting System and those from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA),
As an ICB we must ensure that local mechanisms exist to support compliance with the actions required in National PSAs, in line with the NHS standard contract and the NHS national patient safety strategy.
All new alerts will be triaged and any alerts that may be relevant to the health and social care providers will be highlighted in the provider’s bulletin. In addition, all alerts will be stored in date order in this section so that they are easily accessible to providers .
Review of National Patient Safety Alerts and evidence of the actions you have taken will be one of the mechanisms providers use to evidence that they are delivering safe care.
The NHS Somerset ICB CHC and Care Sector Quality Assurance team are responsible for sending over alerts to be highlighted in this section.
