Saturday 5 August 2023 A yellow wind warning has been issued for the South West and is in effect between 06:00 and 21:00.

Unseasonably windy conditions, accompanied by showers or longer spells of rain, will affect parts of England and Wales during Saturday.
Widely, inland gusts of 35-40mph are possible, with a risk of 45-50 mph especially across parts of south Wales and southwest England. Gusts are expected to reach 50-55 mph in coastal areas, perhaps up to 60-65 mph in the most exposed coastal areas of Wales and southwest of England. Re: Adult Social Care Technology – what could it do to support your care? What are the key areas of improvement?
The South West Academic Health Science Network has teamed up with the Integrated Care Systems of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset to see if we can pull together a bid for funding technology in Adult Social Care settings across the South West.
We want to make sure that we are aware of all the problems faced on the ground and that we are including the views of all those working in and around the Adult Social Care, as well as those people in receipt of their services and their families.
We would be grateful if you could complete and distribute the two short surveys, which will allow us to look at the real life problems, areas of potential improvement through technology, themes and challenges faced by carers, families and the cared for:
All responses are anonymous, by submit your views by 31st August 2023 and forward these links onto any colleagues, carers or families

Call for Participants: LGBTQ+ Older Adult Social Care Assessment Study
The Older LGBTQ+ Adult Social Care Assessment study (LOASCA: https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/loasca) is seeking older LGBTQ+ for interviews about this experiences of social care.
Social care doesn't do as well as other services (such as healthcare) in providing holistic services to LGBTQ+ people, and their study seeks to understand the reasons and provide recommendations to improve services.
The study has ethics approval, both from the National Social Care Research Ethics as well as University of Birmingham - they are happy to share these details if you would like confirmation. This study is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).
I am reaching out to ask whether you might have any members that fall in this category who would like to take part in our interview. The interviews will be conducted by co-researchers (older LGBTQ+ people that have used social care) and can take place wherever the participant wishes, even online or over the phone.
I am attaching their 'call for participants' poster (linked) which has some more information and contact details (and which you can share on your social media channels/newsletter), but please let them know if you would like more information, or if there are any other organisations they might reach out to.

New Dysphagia Resources
The Adult Speech and Language Therapy Service has developed a new Managing Dysphagia Checklist to support staff with managing dysphagia in care homes. In addition to this, we are also changing our referral process to allow care home staff to refer directly without needing to go through a resident’s GP.
A letter will be sent out to all care home managers to inform them of these changes.
We will be available to support all care home staff with this transition and answer any questions or concerns that you may have.

Care Home and Dementia South West Event
26th September, 10am-4pm, Taunton Rugby Club, TA2 8BU
Care home residents with Dementia: how can we do better together? Care Home staff report that their greatest challenge is in getting the right and timely support for people with dementia when they are deteriorating, often leading to an admission which could have been avoidable. Getting the right diagnosis and support requires a collaborative approach, coordinating primary care, community health services, older people mental health teams, secondary care as well as the care staff.
This multi-professional, cross sector approach to the day intends to bring together the collaborative partners to focus on dementia diagnosis and support, with earlier identification of deterioration, to positively impact on reducing urgent care needs, avoiding admissions, improving discharge processes and improved outcomes for the individuals.
