Liberty Protection Safeguards Implementation Delayed
It was no surprise to many of us when the government announced last week (5th April) their decision not to implement LPS ‘within the life of this parliament’. Please see the following link for the full statement. There is no date set for implementation as this will be for the new government after the next general election to decide. The next General Election will occur by the end of 2024 at the latest.
We still have the DoLS scheme and the Community DoL process for addressing the need to scrutinise situations where people may be deprived of their liberty. We hope that the government will be able to make some amendments to the existing schemes to render them more effective. In the meantime keep identifying deprivations of liberty and communicating with the DoLS team.
Although LPS is not happening in the near future, we still have a lot of work to do to make sure the Mental Capacity Act achieves is aim of maximising the control our service users have over the decisions which affect them.

Free Access to Wellbeing Apps
Following the ending of the ICS contract with the ShinyMind Wellbeing App, we are now in a position to promote some free alternatives for you to choose from.
Smiling Mind, MindShift, and Headspace apps are free, have been assessed by Somerset ORCHA Apps library for health and care related apps, and can be downloaded from ORCHA. (please note that the Headspace App has some in-app purchases).
Developed by psychologists and educators. Programs in the app are underpinned by mindfulness and positive psychology strategies and designed to build mental fitness and resilience; support good sleep, study and sports training; reduce stress and improve relationships; and promote the development of new social and emotional skills.
Helps you reduce worry, stress, and panic by following evidence-based strategies. Using CBT tools, you can challenge negativity, learn more about anxiety, develop more effective ways of thinking, be mindful, and relax. Learn more about anxiety, practice cognitive behavioural therapy, and reduce the amount of worry, panic, social anxiety, and discomfort from phobias that you experience.
Headspace: Mindful Meditation
Stress less, sleep soundly, and get happier. Headspace is everyday mindfulness and meditation, so you can make mindfulness a daily habit and be kind to your mind. Learn how to relax, manage stress, find your focus, and release tension in both the mind and body. Find the calm in everyday with Headspace.

The South West Care Home Network Event takes place four times a year and is an opportunity to hear from care homes and experts in Adult & Social Care about managing deterioration in residents.
These sessions provide a platform for learning and sharing ideas for improving the range of services that care homes provide. The aim is to bring together care home managers and staff, healthcare leaders, CCGs, local authorities and experts from across the sector to look at improvements, examples of good practice and interventions that will support and develop care homes.
The focus is on promoting collaboration and co-production of new procedures in high-quality care to manage deterioration and support medicine safety in line with the National Patient Safety Programme.
Join us for our next session on 22 June, 10am-12:30pm, which will be held online via Teams.
