We Need Your Stories!
We are gearing up for our Winter Recruitment Campaign, My Time To Care, and we need your input on crafting the stories we will tell. Please fill out this anonymous questionnaire from the creative team My time to care (typeform.com)
This campaign is very exciting and we really appreciate all the support providers have given us so far - we've got some excellent footage from some providers across the county and are putting that together into 6 short films for promotion on a variety of platforms.
The answers from this questionnaire will shape these films and we'd love your real stories of working in care to be part of this campaign.

Transgender Awareness Week
This week is Transgender Awareness Week, so we are sharing some resources about working with and supporting people who are transgender.

Business Continuity
As we head into the winter months, it’s important to prepare for any potential disruption caused by adverse weather.
The Civil Contingencies Unit has produced a leaflet and a template to support you in making contingency plans in the event of disruption.

Have your say on social care in Somerset
There is still time to take part in Somerset County Council’s Adult Social Care survey and help us understand what is important to you.
We want to hear your thoughts on the challenges facing adult social care in Somerset, how you think spending should be prioritised, and how the service can be improved.
Filling in the survey will only take a few minutes but provides valuable insight as we look to improve services.
This year we’ve spoken to more than 5,000 residents across Somerset about what their priorities are for council spending - and the results made it clear that Adult Social Care is a top priority, coming in second place after protecting children and improving education.
We were recently at Burnham-on-Sea for the EAT Festival, and were fortunate to get to speak to 229 people on day. Joined by our Executive Member for Adult Social Care, Cllr Heather Shearer, we had some excellent conversations with members of the public about all things social care. One thing that was very clear, is that adult social care is a top priority for people of all ages across Somerset, with a wide cross section of people voting it into their top three priorities. This is great news for hardworking staff across the sector, but means that our strategy – our shared plans for the future – is absolutely crucial to get right…
Help us improve our services by sharing your views – it’ll only take a few minutes: bit.ly/caresurvey22

Capacity Tracker
We wanted to give you a quick update regarding the potential fines. Each month, on the 14th, the Department of Health and Social Care requires that care homes and home care providers update the National Capacity Tracker. Up until this point, there have not been any fines for non-compliance, but that has changed from this month.
Make sure you complete your updates on the National Capacity Tracker by the 14th of each month.
The level of the fines will be the same as a provider’s CQC registration fee.
- a care home with 31-35 service users could be looking at a fine of £5,023
- a larger care home with 56-60 service users could be looking at a fine of £8,792
- a home care provider with 20 clients could be looking at a fine of £1,325
- a larger home care provider with 40 clients could be looking at a fine of £2,411
The National Capacity Tracker team is administering and enforces all aspects of the fines on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care. Local authorities are not involved in any aspect of this process.
It is worth noting that most of our providers are doing an amazing job updating their information regularly. You have nothing to worry about, and we thank you for your support.
Please do everything in your power to make sure you do not receive a fine, as it could be significant.
You may also want to ensure that more than one person in your organisation can update the National Capacity Tracker, just in case someone is on holiday or away from the office and not feeling well.
If you require any assistance with refreshing or updating your information, please just call the Support Centre on 0191 691 3729 (Mon-Fri 8 am-5 pm) or send an email to necsu.capacitytracker@nhs.net

Call to action: Improving dysphagia management in the South West
Wednesday 7 December 2022, 10.00am – 1.00pm
This online event hosted by the South West NHSE Learning Disability and Autism Programme Team has been organised in response to learning from LeDeR, which identified dysphagia as one of the top 5 long-term conditions experienced by people with a learning disability who lived in the South West and died in 2021.
The event will provide an opportunity to reflect on LeDeR findings, share learning from across the region, and time to consider with colleagues the issues impacting on the management of dysphagia for people with a learning disability. It will also help inform the regional strategy for improving the management of dysphagia.
We welcome participation from:
- Health and social care commissioners and leaders
- LeDeR local area contacts and reviewers
- Health and social carer providers
- People with lived experience
- Regional colleagues with an interest in this topic

FREE magical festive train ride aboard the Talking Café Christmas Express for unpaid Carers in Somerset
CCS Village Agents (part of the Community Council for Somerset, or CCS) have organised a wonderful steam train festive treat on the West Somerset Railway, for unpaid Carers in the Taunton area.
Taking place on the 2nd December in the early evening, unpaid carers (people who look after someone else, like their partner, parent or child) can apply for a ticket to ride along with the person they care for. Caring for another is very rewarding, but can be lonely and isolating at times.
150 places are available on this magical adventure through the stunning Taunton and West Somerset landscape. There will be mince pies and hot drinks for all, and entertainment provided by a local choir, getting everyone into the holiday spirit. If you are a Carer in the Taunton district, book your seats on the train by the 22nd November. Email Christine Brewer christineb@somersetrcc.org.uk.
The Talking Café Christmas Express has been funded by Somerset County Council and supported by the West Somerset Railway.
If you would like to find out more about how Somerset Carers support people in Somerset, call 0800 31 68 600, visit www.somersetcarers.org, or text CARER to 78070 for a call back.
