  • Considered if there are any vulnerable points for unauthorised people to enter the home, e.g., unsecured windows, kitchen doors left opened or locked areas left unsecure
  • Considered if the planned induction of new staff equips them to maintain and manage your security measures
  • Reviewed security measures as part of the HR processes with starters/ leavers/ staff suspended from duty
  • Recorded a breach in security as an incident and updated your policy as a result
  • Considered if your staff would know how to manage a suspected serious incident so that this was reported promptly, and evidence was secured
  • Liaised with your local PCSO and reviewed the be safe home scheme https://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/apply/be-home-safe-scheme/
  • Audited staff access to electronic records when somebody has left the organisation, e.g., care planning systems, email addresses, what’s app groups

Intergenerational Linking in Care Homes

The Care Home FaNs: Intergenerational Linking project held a webinar on Wednesday 22nd February, sharing the outcomes and benefits from this England wide research project, it included 8000 young people and 2000 residents, with some of the projects happening in the South West being featured! This is very much worth a watch, and we hope to follow up on this success as we get into the spring. A recording of the webinar can be viewed here:
Resources and reports from the project can be found on the project website here.

Capacity tracker help

In the coming weeks the Capacity Tracker Support Team will be introducing a new Helpdesk system to support enquiries. There will be no change in the way users contact the Support Team – it will be business as usual, however, where users receive an email response, it will contain an ID number to track enquiries. There will also be a facility to provide direct feedback on the service received from Capacity Tracker Support Centre. Support Centre contact details: Email: necsucapacitytracker@nhs.net Phone number: 0191 691 3729

Enhanced Health in Care Homes Framework v3

As you will know we are expecting the refreshed version to be published shortly. It is completed and so we are just waiting on a publication date now, we will share widely as soon as it appears! There will be a number of follow up webinars to discuss the changes and updates so that the rationale behind the updates can be understood. The document will look quite different, and written with the ICS audience in mind, to support the key messages about the ICS responsibilities, not to “do to” the sector, but to support them.

Do Not Attempt CPR

Professor Wayne Martin (Professor of Philosophy at the University of Essex) has been leading on national research into DNA_CPR and Resuscitation. As part of this work the team are finding that some institutions have one, some the other, and some both (either separately or unified) of Resuscitation Policies and/or DNACPR Policies. This research the project would like to add Care Homes in the data set, ideally with a broad cross section from regions and types of institutions across England and Wales. Please share the message out to Care Home managers to request that members share their DNA_CPR and/or Resuscitation policies to the Autonomy Project email address (autonomy@essex.ac.uk)

Flu Vaccine Survey

Dear All,

Please can you take the time to complete a survey on the flu vaccine. The Somerset Public Health team are wanting to hear from health and social care employees who have or haven’t had the flu vaccine, to find out your views. The survey is anonymous – your name won’t appear anywhere. There are no right or wrong answers and nothing you say will impact on your job as all answers will be managed confidentially.

They expect the survey to be completed by hundreds if not thousands of staff across the health and care system in Somerset. The results will be used to help the public health team support flu vaccine uptake in the future.

The survey will take 10 minutes at the most, so please put time in your calendar to complete it. As a thank you for taking part, you have the option of taking part in a prize draw where 5 people will receive a £30 shopping voucher.

Please complete the survey here, by 10th April: https://forms.office.com/e/T26F1jXwKm

Thanks,

NHS Somerset have made Thick & Easy™ Clear FIRST LINE ON THE PRESCRIBING FORMULARY. This is to support a system wide approach to the patient safety issues in dysphagia patients and the IDDSI Framework.

The Somerset Speech and Language team have asked that:

  • Where appropriate, all care and nursing homes should use one thickener (Thick & Easy Clear). This ensures patient wellbeing as multiple brands may cause dosage and safety issues.
  • Patients who have an historic use of a starch thickener for GI tolerance issues, e.g Thick & Easy Original, should remain on it.
