The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism has been co-produced, trialled, independently evaluated and will be co-delivered by trainers with lived experience of learning disability and autism.
|
In July the Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a requirement that regulated service providers ensure their staff receive training on learning disability and autism which is appropriate to the person’s role.
|
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is the standardised training that was developed for this purpose and is the government's preferred training for health and social care staff to undertake. It is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training. It is the only training with permission to include Paula McGowan OBE, telling Oliver's story and explaining why the training is taking place.

Somerset residents vote social care as their top priority – now it’s time for YOU to have your say!
How can we improve social care in Somerset? Where should we be prioritising our spending? What are the challenges facing adult social care in Somerset? Please fill in this short survey to help us understand what’s important to you, and how we can improve adult social care services across the county: bit.ly/caresurvey22
|
This year we’ve spoken to over 5000 residents across Somerset about what their priorities are for council spending - and the results made it clear that Adult Social Care is a top priority, coming in second place after protecting children and improving education.
We were recently at Burnham-on-Sea for the EAT Festival, and were fortunate to get to speak to 229 people on day. Joined by our Executive Member for Adult Social Care, cllr Heather Shearer, we had some excellent conversations with members of the public about all things social care. One thing that was very clear, is that adult social care is a top priority for people of all ages across Somerset, with a wide cross section of people voting it into their top three priorities. This is great news for hardworking staff across the sector, but means that our strategy – our shared plans for the future – is absolutely crucial to get right…
Help us improve our services by sharing your views – it’ll only take a few minutes: bit.ly/caresurvey22

Extra Care & Supported Housing Funding Grant
Somerset Physical Activity and Sports Partnership is seeking to fund Extra Care and Sheltered Housing Schemes to support residents to increase their mobility, strength and confidence and move more again following on from Covid-19. The most vulnerable groups in society have been affected by deconditioning and declining mobility levels following the Covid-19 restrictions and lockdowns. With this funding, Extra Care and Sheltered Housing Schemes will be able to strengthen their ability to support residents most at risk of deconditioning to improve mobility, functional fitness and confidence to go out again. This will help to minimise social isolation through supported activities.
|
There is funding available to support providers of Extra care housing schemes for physical re-conditioning of residents, this is following the impact of COVID and the restrictions for residents to take part in activities.
|
Applications will close on December 1st 2022. The fund is for Extra Care and Sheltered Housing schemes in Somerset. Each project can apply for up to £5000. Money must be spent and evaluated by March 31st 2023.
|
Funding can be used to purchase items of equipment, bringing in fitness or activity instructors, training the workforce, providing promotional material for marketing and improving outdoor areas so that physical activity is made more attractive.

McCarthy Stone Foundation Christmas Connections Grants
This Christmas, the Mcarthy Stone Foundation is once again looking for local groups or charities helping older people to find connection and company over the festive period. This can be a particularly difficult time for older people who are isolated or lonely, so we are committing a £20,000 grant fund to help grassroots groups with their Christmas plans.
|
To be eligible your organisation should be under £500k of annual income (organisations under £100k p.a. will be given priority), volunteer driven, and able to demonstrate the impact of your work on people over 65 in the local community. Funds will be restricted to the specific Christmas activity you are undertaking but should be presented on a full cost recovery basis.
