ASC Provider Briefing - 12 August 2022

Dear Care Provider Colleagues,

Welcome to this week's briefing.

We hope you are staying safe in the hot weather.

Please join us for our next Provider Webinar and Q&A on Monday August 15th at 4pm - details and how to join below. This week's briefing includes some resources around coping with extreme heat, some more information about our work on falls, and an announcement from the RCPA, as well as our usual event reminders.

Don’t forget you can now access all latest news, information and events
via our provider-facing website: somersetprovidernetwork.org.uk

Please find the latest news and updates from Adult Social Care below:

Heatwave

There is an Amber Extreme Heat Warning active presently, through to 23:59 on Sunday evening.

Hot weather means a person's body has to work harder to keep its core temperature to normal levels, and this puts extra strain on their heart, lungs and kidneys. This means that they can be at greater risk if they have a heart condition, so it is particularly important to stay cool and hydrated.

Please see the post on the Provider Engagement Network from the previous heatwave for resources and guidance on staying cool, including specifics for care settings: Heatwave Advice (somersetprovidernetwork.org.uk)

Falls

We are doing a lot of work around falls at the moment, both falls prevention and post-fall advice and support.

Falls Prevention

Our Public Health colleagues are exploring the potential to commission services which would include the possibility of having exercise programmes within care / residential homes with the aim of reducing or preventing falls. We would be hugely grateful if home providers could let us know if they already have:-
  • something like this within their setting.
  • If so what type of exercise
  • If they have found it beneficial / useful in preventing / reducing falls
Please can you send feedback to Teri Underwood TUnderwood@somerset.gov.uk

Urgent Community Response

If you have an urgent care need such as a fall where there is no immediate threat to life, please call 999 or 111 and ask for the Urgent Community Response or UCR. For more information, see this presentation slide.

Dear colleague,

We are delighted to inform you that following Simon Blackburn’s departure from the post of CEO at the RCPA, we have recently appointed Hilary Robinson as the new CEO. Many of you will know Hilary, who has been managing the RCPA Trusted Assessor Service. Hilary brings to the role a broad range of experience and knowledge and she will be contacting you directly in September, once she has taken up her new role.

Kind Regards

Laura

Workforce Planning Workshops

Do you want to understand more about social care workforce planning? A good workforce plan will help your organisation be more successful and ensure you have the right people with the right skills at the right time to meet the needs and future opportunities for your business and the local population.

Skills for Care is working in partnership with Somerset County Council to deliver a free to attend learning and development opportunity for care provider employers across Somerset to engage them in workforce planning and workforce re-design.

This will consist of two face-to-face half days sessions that will describe what workforce planning is, national and local drivers, how to affect change and workforce transformation, as well as provide a number of practical resources.

This will be followed by a virtual follow-up session to share ideas, learning, any challenges and hear from others.

After attending the course, delegates will be able to:
  • Define what is workforce planning
  • Explain why it is important
  • Demonstrate how find relevant data and summarise using templates
  • Interpret data, local and national drivers to establish priorities to create a workforce plan
The workshops are targeted primarily at those with a responsibility for workforce transformation and re-design from any size of organisation, for example senior managers/owners, nominated individuals, registered managers, HR leads.
