Don’t forget you can now access all latest news, information and events
via our provider-facing website: somersetprovidernetwork.org.uk

Please find the latest news and updates from Adult Social Care below:

Somerset residents vote social care as their top priority – now it’s time for YOU to have your say!

How can we improve social care in Somerset? Where should we be prioritising our spending? What are the challenges facing adult social care in Somerset? Please fill in this short survey to help us understand what’s important to you, and how we can improve adult social care services across the county: bit.ly/caresurvey22

This year we’ve spoken to over 5000 residents across Somerset about what their priorities are for council spending - and the results made it clear that Adult Social Care is a top priority, coming in second place after protecting children and improving education.

We were recently at Burnham-on-Sea for the EAT Festival, and were fortunate to get to speak to 229 people on day. Joined by our Executive Member for Adult Social Care, cllr Heather Shearer, we had some excellent conversations with members of the public about all things social care. One thing that was very clear, is that adult social care is a top priority for people of all ages across Somerset, with a wide cross section of people voting it into their top three priorities. This is great news for hardworking staff across the sector, but means that our strategy – our shared plans for the future – is absolutely crucial to get right…

Help us improve our services by sharing your views – it’ll only take a few minutes: bit.ly/caresurvey22

South West Care Home Winter Resource Pack

Many of you may recall that to support the Care Homes during COVID and Winter we collaboratively developed a Resource Pack with some simple and accessible information on some of the guidance and resources that might be of help. This was not to replace policies but to offer the information in a different format, which could be printed and put in staff areas or used as aide memoires. In previous years, teams and systems had found this helpful as it can be adapted and edited for specific local support as well. It is specifically left in a PowerPoint format so that local logos, phone numbers etc can all be added if needed, and each page can be used individually rather than as a whole pack if useful.

This pack has been refreshed for this winter with some newer additions reflecting different support now available. We hope that this is of some use to local teams and Care Homes. The pack can be found on the FutureNHS Platform here:

Inevitably as we go through winter it is likely that there may need to be further iterations; if you feel there is a topic missing, or, that information needs further updating please do get in contact.

Thank you to all the contributors for your time in bringing this together

Love to Pedal Challenge

Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership - Love to Pedal Somerset Challenge 2022 (sasp.co.uk)

Love to Pedal is a SASP cycling project aimed at encouraging cycling for all; regardless of age, ability or confidence. Whether you participate with a chair pedal exerciser, exercise bike or regular outdoor bike, why not set yourself a new challenge by pedalling at your own pace, adding up your minutes and seeing how far you can get with one of three virtual challenges?

There are three levels of challenges that can be completed. Choose the correct level for you based on how much pedalling you think you can achieve between these two dates. You can participate as an individual, a family or other team – perhaps you want to group together with residents in one of our Love to Pedal care homes for example? The choice is yours but every minute counts no matter what the speed and will be accumulated towards your overall total.

There are 3 Challenges to take part in: Rides can be accessed here: www.sasp.co.uk/lovetopedal

Beginner - Complete all 12 filmed Love to Pedal virtual cycle rides of Somerset totalling approx. 220mins (3hrs 40mins).

Intermediate - Cycle West to East and North to South of Somerset using the locations of our virtual cycle rides in these areas. Overall total: 424mins (7hrs 4mins)

Advanced - Cycle a virtual loop around all 12 Love to Pedal rides starting and finishing in Minehead: Approx 775mins (12hrs 55mins)
Create an account and track your progress here. You can take part in our challenges with your work colleagues, community groups, friends and family or challenge yourself.”

DHSC Made With Care

DHSC Launched 'Made with Care' Campaign

The latest phase of the Department of Health and Social Care’s national adult social care recruitment campaign has now launched to support the adult social care sector's winter recruitment activity, and will run until March 2023.

With advertising planned across England, the ‘Made with Care’ campaign will reach millions of people via video on demand, radio, and digital channels, raising awareness of the rewarding nature of care work and increasing the number of quality candidates that apply to roles.

The ‘Made with Care’ campaign shows the amazing work that staff across the adult social care sector do. It celebrates the way they empower the people they support and shines a light on the emotional rewards of the role to inspire more people to consider a job in adult social care.

Campaign advertising will direct job seekers to adultsocialcare.co.uk. Here, they will be able to find everything they need to research a career in adult social care and, crucially, search and apply for adult social care jobs near them through DWP ‘Find a Job’.

The campaign includes a suite of new, free resources to help you advertise your job opportunities locally.

Using the free resources to make recruitment easier

The website has free, easy-to-use campaign assets and advice and templates for planning your local recruitment activities.

Post your vacancies on DWP’s ‘Find A Job’ site by following these instructions
The national advertising will direct people to adultsocialcare.co.uk, where they can research careers in adult social care and search for jobs near them through the ‘Find a Job’ platform. To benefit from this interest, make sure they can find and apply to your jobs via this site, in addition to posting them on other job boards or websites you may use.

Adult Speech Therapy

From the 1st November Fresenius Kabi will be taking over the enteral feeding contract from Nutricia. This means that thickener will change from Nutilis Clear to Thick and Easy Clear.

Fresenius Kabi will be supporting with training but further information and resources can be found at Thick & Easy Clear | Fresenius (dysphagia.org.uk)

Thick & Easy Clear is now being used across Somerset and is first line on the formulary and we would like to invite you to a virtual training session. If you would like to join us in the session we can send you a “Goodies Parcel” in the post so that you have the materials you need to mix Thick & Easy Clear in your home for your residents on thickened fluids. We can also email you a tips and tricks sheet, medication guide and poster. Please feel free to print these resources out and display them in your home. There is no limit on who can attend the training and we encourage anyone that makes thickened drinks to come along. We would also be more than happy for members of the kitchen to attend the training as well, as we will be discussing texture modification.

These sessions are going to be held on the 7th and 15th December at 2pm. You are welcome to join both sessions if you wish and you are welcome to forward to invite on to your team so that they can also join the session. If you would like to join the session please contact rosiec.baker@fresenius-kabi.com and we will forward you a link to the teams meeting. It will last for approximately 2 hours, with a break.

The course is going to include training on:

  • Dysphagia – signs, causes and referrals
  • IDDSI levels and guidelines
  • Thick & Easy Clear – and how to mix it
